People In Music History
Varese, Edgard (l883-l965) French-born composer (pupil of d'Indy and Roussel)
who settled in the United States, 1915, and cultivated music involving extremes
of dissonance, unusual instrumentation, and (often) "scientific" titles, e.g.,
Ionization (percussion instruments only) Density 21.5 (flute solo, referring to
specific gravity of platinum), Octandre (Fr. form of Lat. Octandria, plant with
8 stamens). Was also an influential pioneer in the use of taped and electronic
music.
